Spring Break Learning Ideas

Dear Parents,

READING:   Did you know it is so important for your child to continue reading over their long break?  Data shows that students who continue reading over long breaks usually maintain their reading level and progress.  Whereas students who often take a break from reading over vacations….can regress in levels in just 1 week!  So please READ, READ, READ as much as possible!

  • Visit your public library
  • Continue reading on RazKids.Com (Use your student ID & Login)
  • Visit TumbleBooks.Com (Username: Heatherwood/Password: Books)
  • Book bags will NOT be sent home over break.

Writing:  Your child has a Spring Break Writing Journal that they should write in each day over break.  These will be turned in upon returning to school.  This becomes a great keepsake for your child of their Spring Break adventures!

  • Encourage adding interesting details.
  • Use “Writers Eyes” to include punctuation, lowercase letters throughout, capitals at beginning of sentences, and spaces between words.
  • Be sure to include correct vowel sounds, blends, and digraphs when spelling your words.

Math: Take some of the math games with you that we have sent home for extra homework.  Other ideas:

  • Practice skip counting by 2’s, 5’s, & 10’s on long car rides and during walks outside.
  • Play “Guess My Number” by giving clues (example: it’s an even #, it’s less than 20, it’s greater than 10, it’s the sum of 6+6….What am I?)
  • Make up addition and subtraction story problems and discuss solving them out-loud.  (example: If you have 20 toys and you give your brother 15, how many will you have left?)
  • Practice sorting.  Find any objects or items around your home (or even outside), and sort them in all different ways.

Basically, the options are endless!  Have fun with it and help your child to continue learning while away from school.  This will give them a boost of confidence when they return, and can share all their new learnings at school!

Safe travels and Happy Break,

Lisa Cornacchia
