Reading

The ability to read and comprehend what you have read is the key to all learning. First graders are learning the fundamentals of reading that will enable them to launch into more and more difficult texts. Take time with your emerging reader to congratulate them, read to them and ask lots of questions about what they read. Who was in the story? Why was that character in the story? What was the problem of the story?

Students eventually need to be able to retell very detailed information about a story and identify the ‘big idea’ of a story or section of a story. Any work families at home can do to support that development is a plus!
